Perceptual thresholds and tonal categories

چکیده

A discussion of tonal categories relating to pitch perception discrimination thresholds focuses on the differences between pitch perception per se and the perception of tonal timing. In the light of several experimental studies on the perception of tonal timing categories in different languages, it is hypothesized that the perception of level tones can be related to the highly acute psychophysical pitch discrimination ability of human listeners, while the perception of differences in tonal timing is a more complicated process relying on the perception of tonal movement, cognitive categorization strategies and the use of short term memory.

Perception of Pitch and Tonal Timing: Implications for Mechanisms of Tonogenesis

This paper presents a discussion of tonal categories relating to pitch perception discrimination thresholds and the differences between pitch perception and the perception of tonal timing. Based on the results of a perception experiment using Swedish listeners and tonal timing results from the literature, this paper proposes perceptual mechanisms which may help explain the development of contou...

Tonal stability modeling from audio chroma features

This work explores the possibility of modeling tonal stability from music signals, in an attempt to approximate in a different way an ubiquitous, yet controversial, topic in music research: that of the perception of tension and relaxation over time. We rely upon some of the most agreed hypothesis about the hierarchical properties of the tonal system, to define a scenario in which such features ...

Pitch and Alignment in the Perception of Tone and Intonation: Pragmatic Signals and Biological Codes

In this paper a case is made for examining tone perception and particularly phenomena of tonal alignment in terms of perceptual limitations to pitch processing. The perception of pitch and tonal movement is discussed in relationship to research on alignment. Results from perception experiments using Swedish listeners and non-scripted speech production data from Swedish speakers are used to exem...

Effect of musical experience on learning lexical tone categories.

Previous studies suggest that musicians show an advantage in processing and encoding foreign-language lexical tones. The current experiments examined whether musical experience influences the perceptual learning of lexical tone categories. Experiment I examined whether musicians with no prior experience of tonal languages differed from nonmusicians in the perception of a lexical tone continuum....
